How to make the most of a coaching session

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Perhaps you are reading this because you just chose a coach and decided to start a coaching journey. Aiming for a better future and the life you really want. You are feeling committed to the process, ready to take action. Now you found yourself looking online for hacks or tips into how to make the most of your Coach.

Having a coach was life-changing for me. It not only inspired me to study and prepare myself to help people using this methodology but also improved every aspect of my life. After more than 100 hrs of coaching people in 4 continents, I've come with a strategy to help my clients to prepare and make the most of every session.

Regardless of the type of coach you might have they all share something in common. Sure there are a lot of coaches out there (financial coaches, relationship coaches, business coaches, confidence coaches, motherhood and fertility coaches, holistic coaches, transformational coaches, health coaches, emotional intelligence coaches,.... and more!) every one of them has different experiences and personalities but what unites them is that they are all focused on helping their clients to get to where their clients want to be, through the coaching approach. Because even if the niche of coaches might vary, if they are serious coaches who studied with a certified academy, the root of their methodology is the same.

Here are the 4 things you must do before a coaching session to make the most out of it:

- Have something to take notes with

During a coaching session, you might say or hear key thoughts that might help you with your strategy in between sessions. As your coach depending on our conversation there will be moments where I might suggest to you to take note of something important. During your coaching session, I will also encourage you to write down your action plan. And sure those things seem very practical as in why I suggest having something to take notes with but if you need more reasons to convince yourself of taking notes (and the not so secret power of writing things down!) check this blog!

In summary, writing things downs will help you:

1. Writing things down helps you get the most out of your memory and keep track of your ideas.

2. Writing things down will help you stay motivated.

3. Writing things down will help you identify new process and rethink your emotions.

- Have a glass of water available during the call with your coach

I always encourage my clients to keep them self hydrated during the session. Not only because we are made mostly of water and water is great. haha! But also because during our session you will be talking a lot and I want to help you look after your vocal cords.

The last but not least reason why drinking water is so important for your coaching session is because sometimes during this focused conversation at some point you might find yourself blocked. Especially when we start to brainstorm. Apparently drinking water is one way we can reset our thinking patterns helping us get through during those creative blocks.

- Find a quiet and comfortable place for your coaching session

Having a comfy space during your coaching session will help you focus and ultimately make the most of it.

Now the most important step for you to prepare before a coaching session and make the most of it is:

- Asking yourself the following question...

What are you looking to gain as a result of this conversation?

Thinking in advance of what you want (even if you don't get the whole answer by yourself) will help you be on the right mindset for a coaching conversation. As a coach, I have the necessary tools to help you find out what is it that really want and most importantly help you create a plan so that you can get there!
